Women's Self Defense Seminar - Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Once again Sharon Bonewicz and BJJ United will be hosting a Women's Only self defense seminar Fight Like A Girl through the Rape Escape Method. This will be a 3 hour seminar covering the basics. It is easy to learn and anyone can do it. At the last seminar I had an age range of 13-55 and everyone was able to execute the techniques without any problems. This is a Level I Seminar, the cost it $25.00

(If you have already taken the Level I and want to retake it the cost is $10.00. If you bring 2 women with you then it is free to retake. )

You will learn the basic solutions to the most common sexual assault scenarios. Beause of the time constraints I have to limit and pick and choose which techniques I think are the most important, but I am open for questions. The only thing we will NOT cover is weapons defense. Although these situations are common, you will not learn anything effective in a limited amount of time in a 3 hr course.

Wear something comfortable to move around. We will be working on the mats so no shoes. Socks are allowed.

The next BJJ UNITED IN-HOUSE tournament is shaping up to be a good one. Don't forget that it is this Saturday August 29th. All normal classes will be canceled on Saturday for the tournament. You still have time to pre pay for the $20 fee. If you register and pay the day of the event the fee is $30. Take advantage of the pre reg and save yourself a few dollars.

Bjj United Brown Belt stand out JT Torres continues on his hot streak by once again winning his weight class and absolute class at the cbjj European championships last weekend. JT went on to win 9 fights and only had a total of 4 points scored against him the whole weekend. Just a reminder that he has now won the Asian Cbjj event weight and open, the U.S. open Weight and open, The Cbjj no-gi Worlds weight, the Cbjj no-gi Pan am weight, and now the European Cbjj weight and open!!!! WOW!!!! Don't forget he is only 19 years young!!!!

Bjj United Head Instructor Jared Weiner also kept his podium hot streak alive by bringing home the silver medal in the black belt light weight masters division. Jared put out a dominating performance but came up just a little short in the finals against long time rival carlos "portuguese" Viera. If you know Jared, you know he is not satisfied with silver. Jared personaly told me that he is gonna train 10 times harder for the pan ams next month in California and aim for the gold!! Jared has won or placed in the last 4 major Cbjj events he has fought in, pan ams, brasilerios, no-gi pan am, and the Europeans. We are all very proud of him here at BJJ UNITED!!

Grandmaster Helio Gracie Passes

It is with deep sadness that I have to announce that the Master of Maser, the founder of gracie Jiu-Jitsu Grandmaster Helio Gracie has passed. The Grandmaster is survived by his wife Vera, sons Rorion, Relson, Rickson, Rolker, Royler, Royce and Robin and daughters Rherika and Ricci his grandkids and the Gracie family and a family of disciples all practitioners of the art he loved .

at this time I am at a loss of words as words are not enough to describe the greatness of this man who not only developed a martial art but along with his family fought to spread the word of its efficiency to the 4 corners of the World. As a disciple, fan and someone who has had the priviledge of sharing the wisdom of the Grandmaster I can only say that we will all miss him dearly and he will live in spirit forever in all who practice and love this art.

A somber Royler put it perfectly: "He influenced all of us for the better, continues to affect and will continue to affect so many forever!"

I am sure that Grandmaster Helio Gracie is now sharing the big mat in the heavens!

We will miss you dearly!

Rigel will be teaching the Monday night Muay Thai class at 7pm, and as our
schedule grows we will start to implement new morning and noon classes to the
the Muay Thai schedule.  Be sure to come ready to work hard in his class. On
personal note I am very happy to have Kru Rigel on the BJJ UNITED staff, he will
only bring great things to the school and stress the hard work ethic that we

Anual Thanksgiving Turkey Roll

Keeping on with our BJJ UNITED tradition, we will be having our anual turkey roll to burn off all that food the day after thanksgiving!!!! One week after Wilson brings home the Elite XC bantamweight title, the BJJ UNITED instructors stay on a hot streak. Jared brought a 5 person crew to NYC to compete in the 1st CBJJ No-Gi Pan Ams and came home with 5 hard earned medals.

As most of you already know because you watched it live on Showtime Friday night, BJJ United instructor Wilson Reis became the first ever Elite XC Bantam Weight Champion of the WORLD!!! Wilson defeated a VERY TOUGH opponent in Abel Cullum in a five round non stop war. Wilson works harder than pretty much everyone I know, his work ethic and dedication paid off big time when they finally announced "and the new Elite XC Bantam Weight Champion of the world......WILSON REIS" I was very proud of my best friend, because I know personally what he went though and sacrificed his body and time preparing to conquer this giant goal he set a long time ago!

Wilson said after the fight " This belt is dedicated to everyone in my life" This includes everyone one of you at BJJ United, Philly/Jersey MMA, and Tri-State. ONE GIANT TEAM!!! Now Wilson, please take a week off and give our bodies a chance to heal also from you beating the crap out of us for so many weeks now!! Go celebrate you deserve it more than anyone!!!!!!! Bring in you cameras, because i heard that belt is gonna be at BJJ UNITED on Monday!!!

The No-Gi Pan American Games will be held in NYC next week. I will be competing along with a bunch of guys from BJJ United. If anyone wants to come and support us, come see me or Wilson at the school for info.

On Oct 11th and 12th we will be filming a Hip-Hop Video at our school for philly artist Reef the Lost Cause. Reef is Big time on the hip-hop scene, and this video will include a full cage at our school for the two days of filming. This Video will be on constant rotation on MTV. We are looking for 50-70 extras. Race or size is no issue, we pretty much need MMA fans, tattoos, shaved heads, long hair, We want everyone!! I am gonna put a list up at the school for extras, and if you are lucky you might get a main fight scene!! Please see me for details, this will be great exposure for our school.

Womens Sundays have started at BJJ UNITED. Instructor Sharon Bonewicz now has a womens only fitness class at 9am and a womens only BJJ class at 10am. This is a great chance for women to learn and train with one of the best female black belts and fitness instructors in the country!

Wilson Reis will be fighting for the 140lb Elite XC title on Sept 26th on Showtime. He Will be the main event that night, so keep your eyes peeled and look for Wilson to bring the belt back to BJJ UNITED!!

Jared Weiner will make his long awaited return to the cage on Oct 11th in Manasas VA. Jared will be fighting in Combat in the Cage, we will have more info and tickets available soon!

Congratulations to Jared Weiner on in the Brazilian National Championships in Rio 2008.

First thing is first, WILSON IS HOME! After training and visiting his family in Brazil, Wilson is home and back on the mat! Welcome home Reis, from the whole academy.

We still have tickets available for Wilson's fight on May 31st in Newark NJ. This is a huge card for Elite XC, since it will be aired live on CBS for the first time ever.

I would like to personally welcome our newest staff member Andrea Fenner! Andrea will be working the desk area with Blaine and keeping all you guys in check!! Andrea is a long time friend of mine, and even trained a bit at the old school. She will be a great addition to the academy and I look forward to working with her.

I had the honor to Promote Sharon Bonewicz, and Brad Daddis to the rank of Black Belt infront of our whole team yesterday. There were over 15 Black Belts present, including Master Lloyd Irvin, and Master Leo Dalla. Both Sharon and Brad are long time students of mine, and have dedicated a large portion of thier lives to training, learning, teaching, competing, and living Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Sharon is also the first female Black Belt on Team Lloyd Irvin, which is a true inspirtation for all the ladies on the team. I am very proud of both of you, keep training hard, and stay dedicated!!

Wilson wins at Elite XC!!

It's hard for me to find the propper word to describe Wilson's performance on Friday night on the EliteXC card at the Taj Majal. Amazing, unreal, insane or perfect....... any of these words pretty much sums it up!!! Wilson submitted his challenger early in the second round with a head and arm choke from the top position, but not before inflicting a good amount of damage in the first round and he pretty much did the same thing in the second round until he was able to secure the submission for the victory! Wilson also showed he is not afraid to stand up and throw hands along with throw those killer knees from the clinch. Wilson's takedowns were top notch, and once again he out wrestled a D-1 wresting champion. I can guarantee you that the 145lbers out there took notice that there is a new threat on the scene named Wilson Reis! Congrats Wilson!

Everyone should try to make it into class tonight to get a first hand account from Wilson himself. He was truly greatful for all the supporters that showed up, and he asked me to send out a GIANT THANK YOU to everyone that supported him.

The next tournament will be on Febuary 9th at Daddis Fight Camps (the Cherry hill NJ location) The tournament will be Gi and No-Gi. These tournaments have been great in the past and I recomend everyone to check it out. The Superfights are the following.

I want to remind everyone that UFC FIGHTER, Kenny "kenflo" Florian Will be at BJJ UNITED on November 17th for a 3 hour seminar. The Slots have been filling up fast. I highly recommend everyone to attend.
